I believe that this piece shows great emphasis due to the conspicuous lack of background clutter. The hummingbird is definantly the focus of the piece. Also, there is a little bit of patterning in the top left and bottom right corners, which I feel adds to the piece but not in the quantity it is in. Add just a little bit more in those areas, bring it out just an inch or two further. I like the simplicity, but don't let it be too simple.

What do you think the artist is trying to say with this piece?

This was hard for me due to the lack of background "clutter". I see the hummingbird but I don't know what it means, what's the story? Tell the viewer a story an idea. Who knows what a hummingbird means? Tell them while still focusing on the humming bird.

What is working in this piece?

The concept and variety, explorative nature, of the piece are working out well. I like that you did something with wax, it's interesting, it's different. The humming bird also looks good, aside from maybe reading a bit too large when compared to the other pieces, it is seen as a hummingbird. Also I feel that the movement would be really good if you just extended that pattern an inch or two.

What needs to be improved on?

The story, what is the piece saying? If I had never seen a hummingbird before and never know their nature I would know nothing about this piece, give the view some clues, a few details. don't overdo it now, but add a dash. Alot of this piece is working so it was hard to say what needs to be improved and just work it a little bit more.

I believe that in this piece there is a visual balance between the rusted top slab and the hummingbird on the bottom; while although the hummingbird is much larger and darker I still feel as though there is a nice visual balance. Emphasis is most definitely on the dark figure of the hummingbird because it is the largest and most eye catching object on the piece. Unity and Harmony are created throughout this piece as well dude to the interesting background and crackled rusty effect. The wax and rust paint definitely give this piece a unique and unified look by pulling the piece together and it look of similar style and texture throughout.

What do you think the artist is trying to say with this piece?
I am probably shooting aimlessly in a dark alley, but the hummingbird symbolizes many different concepts. Because of its speed, the hummingbird is known as a messenger and stopper of time. It is also a symbol of love, joy, and beauty. The hummingbird is also able to fly backwards, teaching us that we can look back on our past. But, this bird also teaches that we must not dwell on our past; we need to move forward. So after hearing Alyssa talk about her wanting to depict nostalgia I feel as though the depicts exactly what the hummingbird is trying to symbolize.

What is working in this piece?
I feel like the whole composition is essentially “working”. With the combination of materials, underlying layers of wax and papers, the essential hummingbird along with the crackly rust and small boxes to tie the whole piece together create a very aesthetically pleasing piece.

What needs to be improved on?
Possibly proportion? I feel as though the hummingbird could have used up a little more space in order to fill up the emptiness a little bit more and I also feel like something a little more drastic could have been done to tie in the whole piece instead of the tiny boxes, although they work they just seem a tad bit random.
